Brothers suspected of commercial burglaries arrested, Santa Clarita
Two brothers who are suspected in a series of commercial burglaries in the Santa Clarita Valley were arrested early this month by a sheriff’s deputy who saw them in a vehicle that was backed into a parking space in front of a business.
In a statement made by Joshua Dubin of the sheriff’s Santa Clarita Valley Station, Robert Newell, 38, of Valencia, and his brother Jonathan Newell, 43, of Valencia were taken into custody. Jonathan is on non- revocable parole for theft-related charges.
The deputy said he first saw the brothers in the 26400 block of Golden Valley Road about 2 a.m.
Being familiar with the recent string of burglaries, Dubin made contact with the Newell brothers. During his investigation, he found that they were in possession of currency in small denominations, an unlocked safe, a checkbook belonging to a local business owner, a claw hammer and a laptop computer.
Assisting deputies were able to contact the business owner named on the checkbook that was found in the car. The business owner confirmed that her business had just been broken into and that her safe, checkbook and laptop had been stolen.
Detectives will try to determine if the Newell brothers were involved in other recent commercial burglaries that have occurred in Saugus and Canyon Country.
