How medical placement affects the custody workflow

Track the underlying booking, not only the treatment location

A secure medical placement can change where the client is physically housed without changing the underlying criminal booking. Counsel should verify both the LASD booking and the current medical-custody designation before arranging a bond, legal visit or family pickup. A person may remain legally in LASD custody even while receiving treatment in a hospital or correctional medical unit.

Medical clearance and release processing are separate questions

A bondable case does not necessarily mean the person will walk out of a medical unit immediately after a bond is posted. Treatment status, transportation, discharge clearance and another hold can affect the timing or location of release. Counsel should avoid giving the family a release estimate until the custody and medical sides are both confirmed.

Bail, holds and case coordination

Verify release authority before preparing a bond

Confirm the current bail amount or court order, booking number, holds, next court date and any pending transfer. If the client has another detainer or no-bail order, posting a bond on one charge may not result in physical release. The safest workflow is to verify the booking immediately before the bond is executed.

Prepare for movement back to a jail housing facility

Medical custody can be temporary. Once the client is medically cleared, LASD may return the person to another county housing location. Attorneys coordinating visits, service, family communication or release should re-check the live housing record rather than relying on the medical placement from the prior day.

A practical verification sequence for counsel

Build the custody chain before making a release commitment

1. Confirm identity with the client's full legal name and date of birth.
2. Match the current booking number and housing location to the case or charge.
3. Confirm the live bail amount, court order and every known hold or detainer.
4. Ask whether court movement, medical movement or an internal transfer is already pending.

Re-check immediately before posting or traveling

The last verification should happen as close as practical to the bond posting, legal visit or family pickup. A correct location from the morning can be wrong later the same day if the client is moved.
