Juvenile-court status and placement: what counsel should verify

Dorothy Kirby Center is a secure residential treatment placement with a multidisciplinary treatment model. For legal work, counsel should distinguish the placement order and treatment setting from an adult jail booking and coordinate access through Probation's current procedures.

Before advising a family about when a youth may leave custody, identify the next hearing, current placement order, any treatment or program requirement and the person authorized to approve movement or release. A facility's physical location does not answer the legal question of when placement ends.

Build the placement record from the court outward

1. Confirm the youth's current juvenile case and placement order.
2. Identify the assigned Probation contact and current facility.
3. Confirm the next detention, review or placement hearing.
4. Verify the current legal-visitation or attorney-contact process before travel.

Use court and Probation status, not adult-jail assumptions

The controlling questions are why the youth is detained or placed, what order governs the placement and what event can change that status. Adult bail and inmate-locator workflows do not answer those questions.

For current agency procedures, check LA County Probation's official facility information and LA County Probation's current facility population and location information before a time-sensitive visit, bond posting or document delivery.

Legal visits and attorney communication can follow procedures that differ from family visitation. Confirm the current legal-access process directly with Probation before traveling, particularly when a youth has recently been moved between facilities.
