Temporary station custody: what counsel should verify

Do not assume the station is the client's final booking location

Station-level holding can be brief. A client may be moved to an LAPD regional jail, taken to court, released, cited or transferred to another agency before counsel or family arrives. The practical task is to identify who controls the booking now and whether the person is still physically at the station.

Distinguish station holding from LAPD's regional jail system

LAPD currently identifies three principal jail facilities citywide: Metropolitan Detention Center, 77th Street Regional Jail and Valley Jail Section. Its official custody page should be used to confirm current regional-jail information. A station holding entry should not be treated as equivalent to a regional jail with ongoing housing.

Bail and transfer timing while the booking is moving

Verify bail only after the current custodian is known

Before preparing a bond, confirm the booking number if one has been assigned, current bail status, holds and the facility that will actually accept or process the release. If the person is already in transit or has been remanded, instructions from the station may no longer apply.

Re-check after arraignment or a transfer notice

Once a client moves from LAPD to Los Angeles County custody, use the receiving agency's record. Counsel should avoid telling a family to travel to the station merely because it was the original arrest or holding location.

A practical custody check for an LAPD arrest

Verify the booking in the order it can change

1. Confirm the client's identity, arresting LAPD division and booking number if available.
2. Determine whether the person is at a station, one of LAPD's regional jails, court or already in LASD custody.
3. Confirm bail, holds and the next court event with the agency that currently has custody.
4. Re-run the location check if arraignment or transport is imminent.

Do not carry old instructions into a new custody system

Once the client moves from LAPD to LASD, release and access instructions should be re-verified with LASD rather than carried over from the LAPD location.

Official verification before a legal visit or bond

Use LAPD’s official station and custody resources to confirm current agency information. The California Board of State and Community Corrections open-facilities roster is also useful for distinguishing local detention classifications, but current operational use should still be confirmed with LAPD before a time-sensitive visit.
